The rapid advances of the global information age are to a very large extent due to advances in modern electronics. Electronics expertise enhances industries and economies and provides competitive edge to the countries in the world market. M. Sc. Electronics Programme is a unique course started by the University of Kashmir in 1985 to promote research and teaching in diverse domains of electronics. It is designed to suit in a distinct way the requirements of the Electronics industry in the country with an emphasis on research and development, unlike pure engineering and engineering technology programmes. Engineering programs often focus on theory and conceptual design, while engineering technology programs usually focus on application and implementation. Electronic Science subject is developed with a focus on bridging the gap between Science and Engineering and Technology. M. Sc. Electronics programme caters to the need for electronics personnel in the R & D sector of Government organizations, teaching, public sector, and private sector units of the country. This M.Sc. programme provides a broad understanding of contemporary electronics giving expertise in the design, simulation, and construction of electronic devices and systems. It also allows for a flexible approach to studying electronics allowing students to tailor the M. Sc. Electronics programme to fit their interests.
M. Sc. Electronics is a 104 credits program, 24 credits in the first semester, 28 in second and third semester and 24 credits in the fourth semester. |

The B. Tech. in ECE was launched in the University of Kashmir by the Department in 2009 after which the Univesity offered another B. Tech programme at its North Campus. Later, the Department proposed that establishment of a full-fledged College of Engineering for which the Department prepared proposals and did the necessary spadework. The College got established at the Zakoora Campus under the name Institute of Technology in 2013. The Department provided basic Hardware to the college to launch B. Tech. ECE from the Year 2013 and hence all new admission to B. Tech. ECE were stopped at the Department, however, it continued teaching already admitted B. Tech. students until they completed their Degrees till 2018. The Department meanwhile started offering M. Tech. programme in Embedded Systems and Solutions. |

The Department was established in 1985 under the name Postgraduate Department of Electronics and Computer Sciences and was offering two programmes namely M. Sc. Electronics and Post B.Sc. Diploma in Computer Sciences. The Department had made all its way to introduce MCA programme, however, an administrative decision forced the Department to discontinue Post BSC Diploma in Computer Application course when the then Computer Centre was enamed as Department of Computer Applications and Post BSC Diploma and MCA programmes were started in the newly created Department of Computer Sciences. At the same time the name of the Department was changed to Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Technology. |
